As states are pursuing raised standards for student learning, it is important to recognize the essential role of arts education in the development of well-rounded students preparing for college, career, and life readiness. In fact, Tennessee has made significant artistic contributions across the national landscape, and Tennessee’s school teachers and leaders will undoubtedly play an important role in nurturing environments of creativity and innovation that will lead to even greater contributions. The federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) lists the arts and music as a part of a “ well-rounded ” education, and Tennessee schools offer a rich history of supporting arts education. While Tennessee Code Annotated §49-6-1025 speaks to visual art and music instruction for grades K-8, schools also offer courses in dance, theatre, and media arts instruction. (a) The course of instruction in all public schools for kindergarten through grade eight (K-8) shall include art and music education to help each student foster creative thinking, spatial learning, discipline, craftsmanship and the intrinsic rewards of hard work. (b) Local boards of education are encouraged to fully implement the art and music curriculum adopted by the board of education through both art and music classes, as well as integration into other core academic subjects.

In addition, Tennessee graduation requirements stipulate one full credit of fine arts, and many students elect to focus concentration on sequential course offerings in multiple arts disciplines, including visual arts, dance, media arts, theatre, and vocal and instrumental music. As the economic development of Tennessee becomes increasingly dependent upon skills and outcomes that are embedded in the Tennessee Standards for Arts Education, such as critical and creative thinking, problem solving, collaboration, reflection, and persistence, it will become even more important to ensure that Tennessee students are engaged in sequential standards-based arts instruction. Arts education can also reach a diversity of learners by embodying learning modalities, helping all students learn. 2018 Collierville Fire Prevention Poster City Contest Results The Collierville Fire Department is proud to congratulate this year’s Collierville City Fire Prevention Poster Contest winners.

Wonderful posters were submitted by several participating Collierville schools; however, only one winning poster from each grade level (K-12) and division may be sent to the State Fire Marshal’s Office. Local city winners will be recognized at a reception in their honor on Saturday, Oct.

13 at 10 AM at the Morton Museum. The Collierville Fire Department awards each city winner an engraved medal and a certificate. Posters will be on display at the Morton Museum during Fire Prevention Week (Oct. 7-13). The winners and their posters will also be featured on the CFD website: State judging will be held in December 2018 in Nashville, TN. Winners will be notified by January 7 th, 2019. A list of winners and pictures of the winning posters will be posted on the State Fire Marshal’s website.

The following Collierville students’ posters were selected by fire division personnel to send to the state. Collierville’s Tournament of Champions promises to be the premier marching competition of Western Tennessee. Hosted at the brand new Collierville High School’s 5,000 seat state-of-the-art stadium, this spectacular event will bring together Tennessee’s finest marching bands to compete in the areas most prestigious entertaining and educational band event of the year. Our nationally acclaimed judges from coast-to-coast will not only hold bands to the utmost criteria for excellence but will push them to stellar performances as well! Expect an unforgettable experience that will provide both bands and spectators to be inspired, amazed and swept off their feet!

This is the event of the year you won’t want to miss! The Draco Playhouse production of As It Is In Heaven performed in the TN Theatre Association One-Act Play Festival.

Journeys Pacing Guide Grade 1

The production received Superior ratings from the Festival’s judges. Kala Morris and Jamey Ryan were named to the Festival’s All-Star Cast for their individual performances. Cast members were juniors Kala Morris, Mary Powers, and Carly Steed, sophomores Jamey Ryan, Samantha Schott, Maddie Bobbitt, and Teyah Young, and freshmen Emily Siegel and Alexis Steelman. Stage Manager was senior Emily Roark. Congrats to all of these students on a great performance!

First Grade Reading Pacing Guide

The nominations for the Orpheum Theatre’s High School Musical Theatre Awards were announced yesterday. These awards cover schools in West TN, North MS, and Eastern AR within a 200 mile radius of Memphis.

Lighting Control Award - Emma McVay, CATCH ME IF YOU CAN Draco Playhouse production of Catch Me If You Can won 6 awards at the annual High School Musical Theatre Awards!!! That was the most awarded to any school this year.

There were 29 schools from 3 states competing this year. Awards were: Outstanding Overall Production Outstanding Dance Execution Outstanding Set Outstanding Student Orchestra Outstanding Technical Achievement Student Technical Achievement – Andrew Boone CHS is now the only school that has won the Overall Production award multiple times. Congrats to all of the cast, crew, and orchestra for all of their hard work that they put into this production.

Science/STEM District News 2019 Jefferson County STEM Academy Student Application is Live The 2019 Jefferson County STEM Academy will be held from June 3rd to 7th, 2019 at Jefferson Middle School. Interested students will need to choose two paths from those available in the application. It is recommended that students register soon as the camp fills up quickly.
