I've been a volunteer FF for a little over two years now. It's been great, I've had the opportunity to learn a lot, and I've been able to establish some excellent relationships. In addition to that, I work a hipstery white collar job as a Web Developer. At first it was fun, the pay was good($50k @ 19 years old). But the amount of ridiculous petty bullshit has really made me consider quitting. It's not just the political office bullshit.

It's the sitting all day behind a fucking monitor. It feels stupidly poor for my health. And although I continuously learn while at this job, I don't get the sense of fulfillment I get when on a call. It feels like I'm living for myself, rather than living to make the world a little bit less shitty. Ideally, I'd like to acquire my Associates Degree in Information Science & Technology, save a little more money, and condition myself to ensure I am physically fit to handle any task or PT thrown at me. Then apply to Philadelphia for a Career firefighting position.

This is where I'm hoping a PFD member or someone very informed on their hiring practices could educate me. I'm 20 years old, African American, and I possess a Pro Board FF1 certification. If I were to score a 90(I however aim for a 100) or above on the Civil Service exam, what are my chances of being recruited into the academy? Thank you so much, my last question is the residency requirement. Could you tell me more about that? I currently live in Southampton PA, a small town in Bucks County that is right outside of the city. I was hoping to be ablt to commute from there since it's so close.

I've been trying to ride out living out home with my folks until I have enough saved to purchase a home. Renting doesn't seem logical to me as there is no equity in it. OH, and one last thing(I promise). Is it true the city re-imburses tuition?

I definitely want to continue learning. I'm a firm believer that education lasts a lifetime. Took the test the last time they had it like two years back, ended up with a 100 on test and ranked some where in 600's. The way their scoring system works if you tied with another person's score its random to what your number will be. So a 100 on the last test landed you some where between 200 and 800 so some of it is luck. Bonus points help a lot and last time they didn't accept any fire or emt certs from out of state for points so being from PA helps. The test is pretty easy and they give you a study guide that basically gives you all information you need so memorize it.

I believe everyone that scored above 100 did end up getting a call back to proceed on with process, the lists remain active for about 2-3years until the next testing process.
