The Trane Company is a manufacturer of air conditioning and heating products. The Trane XE 1000 is a heat pump and is designed for cooling and heating your home. Trane has developed the XE 1000 from scratch.
Trane controlled the design and manufacturing of the process all from within the company. The company claims the XE 1000's innovations make it a reliable, efficient, and economical choice. Comes fully charged from the factory for up to 15 feet of piping and can handle outdoor ambient temperature of up to 115 degrees Fahrenheit. Trane XE 1000 is a discontinued 10 SEER split system heat pump with an HSPF of up to 8.10.
It is available in 1- to 5-ton capacities and a range of 12,000 to 60,000 BTU/H. The unit features a Climatuff compressor, the company’s proprietary Spine Fin aluminum outdoor coil, braze refrigerant connections and a liquid lined filter drier. The cabinet of the Trane XE 1000 heat pump has full-side louvered panels with a baked-on powder paint used for resistance to corrosion and rust. Access to the internal functioning parts is attained via a single-side service panel. In order to ensure proper and reliable functioning of the Trane XE 1000, the manufacturer advises that filters should be cleaned monthly and the outdoor unit should be kept clear of debris. The baked-on powder paint allows for washing with soap and water to maintain a clean appearance. Trane XE 1000 Specifications Compressor The XE 1000 uses a Climatuff compressor to power it and is rated at 1 to 3.5 tons.
The compressor is the first of four major parts of a heat pump unit. These units work using a gas that can be changed into a liquid and back again. The compressor squeezes the gas into it is a high temperature, high pressure gas. It then moves the gas into the next phase.
Compressors are rated in tons. Each ton is rated to 12,000 BTUs. Condenser The Trane XE 1000 uses a spine fin coil system for its condenser.
The fins are on the condenser because it must radiate the heat away from the hot gas. The condenser allows the gas to cool and transform back into a cool liquid still under high pressure.
Evaporator The evaporator may cool as manufactured to an ambient temperature of 55 degrees Fahrenheit. With optional parts the ambient temperature can drop to as low as 30 degrees Fahrenheit. As the liquid leaves the condenser it goes through a small hole into the evaporator. This reduces the pressure on the liquid and it evaporates back into a gas.

The evaporator also has fins on it and as the liquid evaporates it pulls heat out of the air. A fan circulates the air from around the evaporator and distributes it through the house. It pushes out hot air, which goes to ducts at the top of the room. This air then cools the evaporator and is distributed throughout the house. Reverse the gas-to-liquid process and this will generate heat.
Defroster The coils on the condenser tend to freeze when a heat pump is used for heating purposes. The XE 1000 handles any frost accumulation through an electronic demand defrost controller.
This allows the heat pump to momentarily switch back to a.c mode to heat up the coils and melt the ice. Burners heat up the cold air being produced while this defrost process is going on. Casing The XE 1000 is covered by an steel cabinet that offers protection all the way around the coil. This cabinet is powder-coated with paint so it can resist the elements and prevent corrosion buildup. If you need to service the heat pump, the cabinet has a single side access for all the major components. Trane has built-in multi-use service valves for easy maintenance. Dimensions The XE 1000 is 23 5/8-by-20 inches.
The base model is 24 3/8 inches tall. The largest XE 1000 model measures 38 7/8-by-34 3/4 inches and stands 37 inches tall. Options Trane manufactures a variety of options that can enhance your heat pump. An automatic indoor programmable thermostat may be purchased for your XE 1000. Several other thermostats are also manufactured for indoor use. To upgrade the unit you may purchase such improvements as line insulation kits, crank case heater kits, and a quick-start kit.
Safety Each Trane product is tested and certified by Underwriters Laboratories. The XE 1000 is also certified for use in Canada. Trane also meets ARI (now AHRI) certification measures. The Air-Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute certifies that it has tested the product and that the unit can perform like it is advertised to perform. Consumer Reviews of the TRANE XE 1000 'Hello everyone i would have to say that the trane xe 1000 is the most dependable heat pump on the market.I have had a trane unit in my house for the last 25 years and they are by far the best. Most efficent units out today. They have new 13 seer units out now, mine has worked so well i hate to replace it.
But you can bet that when i do it will be with a trane unit. Back in the late 80's trane came out with a unit called the 1500 series it had varitiable speed compressore and the indoor unit had a multy speed blower on it,it worked great except in rurle areas where you would have power flucuaction that caused the computer part to go out alot. Then in the middle 90's they came out with a 1800 it had 2 compressoure in them, one large one and one small one the large one would run till it got the tem up and then the small one would keep it at the temp you set it. There again it had to many computer parts in it,unlike the xe1000.the xe100 in my opinion is tranes best of the best.' 'I love our trane xe 1000 we have had it for 3 years now and I dont know what we ever did with out it. Our electric bill has went down so much it is unreal all the while our comfort level within our house has went up.
I would recommend this to anyone!!!!' 'I am very disappointed with the life of the compressor in my 5 ton Trane XE 1000. This was the contractors unit put in when the house was built 10 years ago.

While the unit came with high recommendation and served us well durring those years, every company I have had over to quote replacement has expressed surprise that the compressor failed this early. According to these experts the unit is correctly matched to the use and to the rest of the system. It seems to be properly installed and ducted. Regular (annual) maintenance was preformed by a licenced service company. I guess mine was the unit that dragged down the average lifetime expectancy for all of the others.' 'Got a new Trane xe1000 Heat Pump in 1994.
Air Handler had to be replaced around 1999. About 2 years ago, the coil started to corrode. Overall, the heat pump only needed about $500 in repairs in 15 years, but the air handler hasn't lasted for 10 years and now am having to replace the whole system since r22 will be hard to get after. Would recommend seeing if there is a better system out there.'
'We have owned our trane xe1000 system for twelve years. The unit has been flawless. We noticed that our bills were starting to go up so we had the unit checked. Turns out that the air handler is rusting out from the moisture in our crawlspace. Not Trane's fault.
Living in Virginia everything condensates with our hot and humid summers. I am replacing it with a 15 seer unit this week. I am confident that it will be flawless as well. A clean install will keep the unit from failing. It is difficult to keep contaminates out of the line set.
But if your tech is careful the unit will last for years. If not the compressor and everything else will fail early.' A homeowner seeking assistance from HVAC professionals on doityourself.com reports an instance of system failure with the Trane XE 1000 in which the system gets “stuck” between heating and cooling modes. A technician originally fixed the problem by adjusting the reverser valve on the compressor, but it turned out to be only a temporary fix. A contractor on the online forum suggests the problem is a failure of the reversal valve.
The repair is expensive, the tech notes, and it is suggested that the homeowner consider replacing the entire system as a result. Another on gardenweb.com a problem where the inside and outside heating components are dead, even when set to emergency heat, although the thermostat shows attempts to turn on. An HVAC professional reveals that the problem is an electrical short that will require all new wiring. Online techs indicate this is a fairly common problem, generally the result of loose connections at the heat strips. Trane split outdoor air conditioners and heat pumps, when combined with an indoor gas furnace and cooling coil or an air handler, provide a balanced system to offer you maximum comfort at lower operating costs. The Trane XE 1000 air conditioners offer efficiency SEER ratings in the 10.00 range and HSPFs up to 8.10, which meet the minimum standards mandated by federal standards today. Plus, if your old unit is at least 10 years old, you could realize up to 40% accumulated savings over a three-year period of operating costs.
